IFC celebrated it's anniversary in 2008 by launching this "Modern Classics" to show a total of 4 (indeed 5) classic movies. Betty has got invites to the movie premier and I originally wanted to watch Blow Up but we all finally agreed to go watching Red/Balloon and White Horse.

The Red Balloon
Le Ballon Rouge

The movie was made in 1956 in France by Albert Lamorisse. The thirty-four minute short film, which follows the adventures of a young boy who one day finds a sentient, mute, red balloon, was filmed in the Ménilmontant neighborhood of Paris, France.

It won numerous awards when released in its day, including an Oscar for Lamorisse for writing the best original screenplay in 1956 and the Palme d'Or for short films at Cannes. The film also became popular with children and educators.

Albert Lamorisse used his children as actors in the film. His son, Pascal Lamorisse, plays Pascal in the main role, and his daughter Sabine portrays a little girl.

It was indeed a very funny movie. No one said anything in the movie but it told a very vivid story. It was a colored picture in 1956, before the days I was born so you can imagine it's quite amazing to watch. We can all see that the balloon with conscious was linked with a string. But it was the last scene which made you wonder. All the balloons in the city came out after the big red balloon died and then they gathered together and pulled the child away from the bad kids. You wonder how to make this without all the special effects nowaday.
