IFC celebrated it's anniversary in 2008 by launching this "Modern Classics" to show a total of 4 (indeed 5) classic movies. Betty has got invites to the movie premier and I originally wanted to watch Blow Up but we all finally agreed to go watching Red/Balloon and White Mane.
White Mane
Crin Blanc
The forty-seven minute short, filmed in the marshes of Camargue, France, won numerous awards when released in its day, including the Palme d'Or Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The film also became popular with children and was marketed for them as such.
The story tells a fable of how a young boy gentles an untamable wild white stallion named White Mane. Ranchers go after wild horses led by White Mane, which escapes capture time after time. The small boy who witnesses the horse's furious fight for its freedom makes friends with the horse after the trackers supposedly give him up to whomever can capture him. They change their minds when they see the boy has tamed him and take off after the horse again, with the boy on his back. Both boy and horse, fed up with the continual fight for freedom and peace, and the duplicity of men, head out to sea as the men plead with the boy to turn back.
